New USB cable for FMS rc flight simulator

We've talked about the free RC flight simulator called FMS. It can be operated with keyboard, USB game controller, or your own radio transmitter with a commercial USB cable. Until now, this last option has been somewhat expensive, with USB cables around $50.

Now Hitec RCD (hitecrcd.com) has a USB cable product for FMS. For JR brand transmitters, only $12. Hitec and Futaba transmitters need an additional adapter, for a $24 total price tag.

This is a low cost way to get into simulators with the same transmitter that you will use on your rc airplane.

Electric Ducted Fans

Designers of rc jet airplanes have a few options available to them. They can stick a big propellor on the back (pusher jet), but this doesn't look so nice. Then there's the very scale model jet turbine, but this is an expensive option. A good compromise of form, function and price is the ducted fan engine. These can be driven by either glow-powered engines, or electric motors. The latter are becoming very popular for this type of power system.

Model Helicopters on Prime Time TV

OK, show of hands, who saw the TAG (Tactical Assistance Group) chopper on CSI: NY last night? This radio controlled helicopter had twin machine guns that proved very deadly.

There was a small inaccuracy in the script (which we’ll forgive since we’re just happy to see our “toys” on television). The pilot referred to battery time as if it were an electric helicopter (and a battery looking a lot like an 8 cell NiCad pack was shown). Yet when the helicopter canopy was lifted off, you could clearly see a glow engine muffler 

Or maybe you saw the UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) Assault Chopper on Alias a couple of weeks ago? This was a smaller electric heli that was totally autonomous. It could use facial recognition software to acquire, then go after, a target.

It’s perhaps a sign of the times that these units are now featured as main parts of the plot lines in these episodes. Previous use of rc helicopters and rc airplanes was primarily to represent the real thing, in special effects, chase or crash scenes.

However with the advent of electric parkflyers, rc airplanes and their kin are perhaps more forefront in the minds of television writers. Couple that with military action taking place overseas using well-publicized UAV’s, and it’s no wonder that writers are coming up with these ideas.

Scale Models - Weathering

Weathering of scale models is the process of duplicating the wear and tear that real airplanes see during their life. A nice shiny new-looking model is fine for representing something just out of the factory. Most planes in operation start to show signs of wear quickly.

Check out our guide to Scale Models - Weathering to learn more about weathering techniques that will make your model look that much more realistic.

Scale Models - Panel Lines

The panel lines on real aircraft, when duplicated on models, add a great amount of realism to rc airplanes. The model builder needs good documentation (reference photos) and a systematic procedure for drawing lines on the model. The right types of marking instruments can add greatly to the illusion (please, no black Sharpie pens!)

Check out our guide to Scale Models - Panel Lines to learn more.

Scale Models - Decals and Markings

Real aircraft have letters, numbers, flags and other insignia that make each one unique. Decals are used on model aircraft to capture this uniqueness. Well-made and applied decals and markings can set your scale model apart.

Scale Models: Masking

Ever wondered how a multi-colored paint scheme was done on an RC airplane? More often than not, this involves some masking. Carefully planned and well executed masking can be the difference between an easily-painted scale masterpiece, or a frustrating dud.

Scale Models: Pre-Shading

Real airplanes are subject to lots of wear and tear. Their paint will usually fade in the sun, and it can be challenging to duplicate that "faded look". Pre-shading is one technique that can help achieve that look.

Accent Trim Schemes

Following on the heels of our recent lesson on how to do heat shrink plastic coverings, is this one on how to do trim schemes from the same material. Accent trim not only makes your rc airplane look better, but it could also help prevent a crash. Planes covered in only color can be hard to see clearly at a distance. Some color schemes (e.g. sky blue!) should be avoided. We discuss color schemes and how to apply them.

Heat Shrink Plastic Film Covering

Covering an RC airplane with heat shrinkable plastic film such as Monokote or Ultracote can result in a beautiful, customized craft. There is definitely an art to doing this well, but the good news is that the art can be learned. Following a few simple procedures, and a bit of practice, will result in airplanes that are envied by your entire flying group.

Balsa Wood Building Sequence

Many modern RC airplanes come with a high degree of prefabrication, and are sometimes made out of foam or fiberglass. These planes can usually be assembled very quickly. Yet there's something to be said about building one's own airplane from balsa wood. The structure can be stronger, lighter, and more durable. Plus, the finish can be completely customized.

Drawing Model Airplane Plans using a Plastic Kit

Ever heard of someone taking a plastic display model (e.g. Monogram or Testors), and from that drawing their own rc airplane plans and building a scale masterpiece? How on earth is that done? Well, in small steps. Part of the challenge is transferring the 3D information from the model shape onto a 2D plan. This can be done readily using a Contour Gauge.

Find out how in our Guide to Using a Contour Gauge.

How to transfer drawings to wood

For those of you who build rc airplanes from plans, you will have spent a bit of time transferring the drawings of all the component parts from the plan to the balsa or plywood. I've tried several methods and the easiest and quickest has been the use of lacquer thinner. I highly recommend that you give this method a try!

Tuning the RC Airplane Engine for Best Performance

Tuning the model airplane engine is sometimes seen as a black art, only to be attempted by those with years of experience. The truth is that you can tune your engine for peak performance by following some fairly simple procedures. Having the engine tuned correctly will ensure that it delivers maximum power without overheating, and that it will idle smoothly without quitting. This is a skill well worth learning! See our How to Tune Your Engine guide to learn more.

Movie: The Aviator

If you're reading this blog you probably have some interest in aviation and aviation history. If so you should definitely catch the Scorcese movie "The Aviator" while it's still in theaters. Saw it today and liked it: great acting, historical content, and of course, airplanes.

Some of these were actually RC airplanes. Visit this link for some short videos that show the making of the film, including model planes and special effects:

Now I really have an urge to build a Hughes H1B Racer! Found a source that has a plan for a speed 400 Electric version. You will need a program that opens .dfx (I use Adobe Illustrator). You will definitely need experience to build this one (and to fly it!). BTW, the plan text is in Italian, but CAD is the universal language, right?

USB controller mod for RC flight simulator use

Some RC flight sims do support USB controllers. Computer game controllers with two sticks similar to an RC airplane transmitter can be found cheaply, e.g. the Logitech Dual Pad Axis controller. These are around $20 or so, and a great compliment to the free (yes!) FMS flight simulator.

One nice thing to do to make these controllers even better is to modify the throttle control. The game pad is designed so that all sticks recenter after letting go. We'd like the throttle to stay where it's put, as in the picture below:

After this mod, throttle stick will no longer recenter itself Posted by Hello

RC Flight Simulator section updated

We’ve updated our section on rc flight simulators, with screenshots of popular sims on the market:

http://www.rc-airplane-advisor.com/rc-flight-simulators.html

If you’re not familiar with the rc flight simulator concept, take a look at that link. The flight sim can save you lots of time and money when learning to fly. This is especially true when trying to learn aerobatics, or when learning to fly helicopters (which have a high cost per crash value). Even if you already know how to fly, flight simulators can be fun to play with when the weather is bad, or if your pride and joy is undergoing some so-called "maintenance”.

Airbrush Tutorial added to site!

The best painting solution for rc airplanes is really the airbrush. When equipped with an air compressor as the air source, it becomes like a bottomless spray can, with the added benefits of control of the air pressure and of the paint amount. An airbrush can be used to paint small plastic display models as well as large RC airplane kits.

Most scale rc airplanes are painted with an airbrush. It's a skill that takes some practice to acquire, but is well worth learning as it is applicable to many other hobbies.

We've now added a comprehensive Airbrush Tutorial to the website. This goes into great detail about selecting the proper equipment and paints, as well as how to paint. Don't miss it!
